2nd Stop: South Carolina

We decided to take our trip up through South Carolina and Tennessee.
 On the road again!
For the Fourth of July we drove to the coast of South Carolina for some festivities. We drove over this bridge to Mount Pleasant, which is just off the coast of Charleston.

We headed to the beach on the 4th, because I had read about a Salute from the Shore along the coast. They said they get antique military planes to fly along the coast, which sounded pretty cool.
The beach was pretty, but pretty full.
We got excited as the planes came out... only to discover that there were only about 8 planes total. So cool... but not that cool. It was fun to walk along the beach, but the salute was pretty much a blink and you miss it kind of thing.

Then we were going to watch fireworks off of this battleship, but we were so tired that night and it was so crowded that we walked partway there and saw a little open area  where people were putting up chairs and decided to stop there to watch.
The view would have been much better without that hotel there!

In the morning we headed over to Patriots Point where the ship was to look around.

This was set up as a military camp in Vietnam according to the plaque. It was pretty interesting.

After staying two nights in Mt. Pleasant, we drove up to Columbia and stopped at the Congaree National Park.

There was this really fun, short (well about 2 miles) boardwalk trail through part of the park.

It was a little less fun once we saw this guy hanging out on a tree right off the trail. he was pretty long!

But the nature was really pretty. There were tons of the nobs (pictured below) that were once referred to as wood elves that came out at night.

Halfway through the trail we came to this little swampy lake. And what did we find in the lake?

Lots of little turtles!!

Columbia South Carolina Temple!
On the way out of Columbia we stopped by the temple to take a look. It was tiny, with lots of foliage so we almost missed it. But we found it and it is very pretty!
